The topaz has been known for at least 2000 years and is one of the gemstones which form the foundations of the twelve gates to the Holy City of the New Jerusalem. It is a fluorine aluminum silicate and comes in yellow, yellow-brown, honey-yellow, flax, brown, green, blue, light blue, red and pink and sometimes it has no color at all. Topaz has a hardness of 8, a specific gravity of 3.4–3.6, and a vitreous luster. Pure topaz is transparent but is usually tinted by impurities; typical topaz is wine or straw-yellow. In mysticism, the topaz is attributed with a cooling, styptic and appetizing effect and it is said to dispel sadness, anger and nocturnal fears. The amethyst is extravagance in violet and has its hardness (7), its moderate refraction and its weight in common with the other quartzes, but the crystal structure is different, and it is most unconventional. The construction is stratified, as a result of which areas and lamellae of varying color intensity often come about. This explains why there are relatively few large cut amethysts of an evenly distributed dark color. Most of the material from Brazil is light-colored, a tender purple. In Madagascar, it is generally red or violet hues. Its color is as unique as it is seductive and stones of the finest violet still fetch high carat prices. The blue of the sapphire has become a color which fits in with everything that is constant and reliable. Tourmalines are gems with an incomparable variety of colors. The reason, according to an old Egyptian legend, is that the tourmaline, on its long journey up from the centre of the Earth, passed over a rainbow. In doing so, it assumed all the colors of the rainbow. And that is why it is still referred to as the 'gemstone of the rainbow' today. There are tourmalines which change their color when the light changes from daylight to artificial light, and some show the light effect of a cat's eye. No two tourmalines are exactly alike. This gemstone has excellent wearing qualities and is easy to look after, for all tourmalines have a good hardness of 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. In the fascinating world of gemstones, the tourmaline is very special, its glorious and incomparable spectrum of colors make it one of the most popular and apart from that-almost every tourmaline is unique.

The shining green tsavorite is a young gemstone with a very long geological history. Its home is the East-African bushland along the border between Kenya and Tanzania. What is it that makes the tsavorite so desirable? Well, for one thing there is its vivid, radiant green. The color range of the tsavorite includes a spring like light green, an intense blue-green and a deep forest green - colors which have a refreshing and invigorating effect on the senses. However, this gemstone is also valuable on account of its great brilliance. It has, like all the other garnets, a particularly high refractive index (1.734/44). Not without reason did they use to say in the old legends that a garnet was a difficult thing to hide. Its sparkling light was said to remain visible even through clothing.
Many people have come to know and love this stone under the name gold topaz, or Madeira or Spanish topaz. However, the citrine is a member of the large quartz family, a family which, with its multitude of colors and very various structures, offers gemstone lovers almost everything their hearts desire in terms of adornment and decoration, from absolutely clear rock crystal to black onyx. The citrine has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and is thus, to a large extent, insensitive to scratches. There are not many yellow gemstones in the world of jewels. Rare though it is, yellow does in fact occur in quartz in Nature. Silver is the commonest of the precious metals. Fine silver is pure silver, which is seldom used for jewelry because it is too soft. Sterling silver is 925 parts silver to 75 of copper, the alloy most often used. Silver weighs about half as much as gold, has greater flexibility, but is not as malleable, it has always been less expensive as well. A comparable piece of gold jewelry might cost four or five times that of a piece of sterling silver jewelry.
